Rhinoplasty Surgery to Improve Nasal Contour and Restore Breathing

Correcting the Nasal Hump or Bridge of the Nose

The most common reason to request rhinoplasty is because of the 'hump on the nose.'  In order to accurately discuss a rhinoplasty, we should really start out by discussing what causes the bridge of the nose to have a hump and the options available to correct a nasal hump.  Quite frankly, a rhinoplasty is the gold standard for correction of a nasal hump and an understanding of the nasal anatomy can simplify the decision process for rhinoplasty surgery.

The nasal hump is usually caused by an overgrowth of cartilage and bone on the bridge of the nose.  This overgrowth is not abnormal, but occurs as a result of family traits or genetics.  It is not uncommon for patients to have noses that are very similar to their mother or father.  In many cases, there are ethnic characteristics that are widely associated with certain geographic or ethnic populations.  Regardless of the cause, the goal of rhinoplasty surgery is to reduce the nasal hump by shaving it down to a point that produces a natural side profile and nasal contour.  This reduction is what comprises the most important aspect of a rhinoplasty.

For years, the most common type of rhinoplasty removed the nasal hump to a point that it produced a curvature or slope of the nasal bridge.  Thus, the nose was converted from a hump to a ski-slope appearance.

Dr. Karamanoukian believes that a well-performed rhinoplasty should be a natural extension of the face. This is acheived by understanding and appreciating facial features such as the shape of the eyes, the nasal bridge, cheek projection, and perioral areas.  A nasal hump reduction should complement the face and restore a normal contour to the nose.

Benefits of a Rhinoplasty or Septorhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty procedures are common all over the world.  Nose surgery can be cosmetic or reconstructive and can be performed in order to improve cosmetic results, correct a previous rhinoplasty, or to improve breathing.  The benefits of rhinoplasty include:

  1. Improved self-esteem and confidence
  2. Facial harmony
  3. Improved breathing
  4. Repair of a broken nose
  5. Correction of sports related trauma

The Goals of Rhinoplasty or Septoplasty Surgery with Dr. Karamanoukia

Rhinoplasty and septoplasty are two separate surgeries that are often performed in unison.  The goals of rhinoplasty are to correct the cosmetic and structural aspects of the nasal tip, nasal bridge, and nostrils in order for the nose to attain a better shape and contour.  Some aspects of rhinoplasty are reconstructive in order to correct a structural element of the nose shape.  Septoplasty is performed to improve breathing in patients.
  1. Reduce the size and appearance of the nose (including nasal tip, bridge, nostrils, and nasal hump).
  2. Reduce the width of the nose.
  3. Reduce the size of the nostrils.
  4. Correct unevenness of the nose or nasal tip.
  5. Improve the shape of the nasal tip to make it less bulbous, boxy, or round.

Information about Rhinoplasty Surgery in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica

Where will my rhinoplasty surgery be performed? Dr. Karamanoukian performs all of the rhinoplasty and nose procedures in an outpatient surgical center or hospital setting.  In most cases, your rhinoplasty procedure will be scheduled in either Santa Monica or Beverly Hills at an accredited surgical center that is equipped with the latest equipment for outpatient surgical care.  Rhinoplasty procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia and our office will arrange for you to speak with our board certified anesthesiologists prior to your procedure so that all of your questions about anesthesia are answered.   Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is double board certified and will maintain the highest level of safety during your rhinoplasty surgery.

What is an outpatient surgical center? Rhinoplasty surgery requires anesthesia.  In order to maintain the highest level of patient and surgical care, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian will perform your surgery in an accredited outpatient surgical center.  Outpatient surgical centers are equipped to perform non-hospital based surgeries under anesthesia and it is anticipated that you will go to an aftercare facility or home after your surgery.  Unlike a hospital, an outpatient surgical center does not have an inpatient overnight recovery area and once you have recovered from anesthesia, you will be discharged home. According to Dr. Karamanoukian, most rhinoplasties in the United States are performed in an outpatient surgical center.

What happens the night of surgery?  Once your rhinoplasty is complete, your anesthesiologist will wake you up and you will be allowed to rest in the recovery area of the surgical center.  A nurse will attend to your needs and monitor your progress in anticipation of discharge after your rhinoplasty.  During this period, the registered recovery room nurse will monitor your rhinoplasty and make sure that your blood pressure and vital signs are normal.  Once recovered, you will be discharged to your home or an aftercare facility where you can recover and rest after your rhinoplasty. There are many aftercare facilities available in Santa Monica or Beverly Hills and our plastic surgery office will help accommodate your request for care.

How long does a rhinoplasty operation take to perform?  Obtaining an outstanding surgical result takes time and meticulous attention to detail.  Most rhinoplasty procedures will take, on average, approximately two to three hours.  More complex rhinoplasties will generally take longer to perform, particularly if a cartilage graft is required.  During this time, you will be under the care of Dr. Karamanoukian, a board certified plastic surgeon, and a board certified anesthesiologist, who is an expert in anesthesia care.

What exactly is a rhinoplasty? Is a rhinoplasty the same as a nose job? There are many terms used to describe surgeries on the nose, including nose job, nasal surgery, rhinoplasty, septorhinoplasty, and septoplasty.  A rhinoplasty is a term used to describe a nasal surgery to correct the aesthetic profile of the nose.  This is the most commonly used medical term to describe a cosmetic nasal surgery.  Many surgeons in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica will refer to a nose job as a rhinoplasty procedure or cosmetic rhinoplasty.  A septoplasty surgery is one that corrects the cartilaginous septum that is often deviated as a result of overgrowth or trauma.  If the nose is crooked, chances are that the septum is deviated or bent.  A septoplasty corrects the cartilage septum and restores it to a normal position.  Both rhinoplasty and septoplasty are performed by Dr. Karamanoukian in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, and Beverly Hills.  Finally, a septorhinoplasty describes the combination of cosmetic nasal surgery with septoplasty.  As you can see that Dr. Karamanoukian’s website is septorhinoplasty.com, he specializes in this particular procedure.

What is the difference between a functional rhinoplasty and cosmetic rhinoplasty? A cosmetic rhinoplasty only focuses on the contours of the nose and does little to correct the breathing.  A functional rhinoplasty corrects the breathing problem but does little to correct the cosmetic part of the nose.  In most cases, however, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian will go over both types of rhinoplasty with you in his Beverly Hills or Santa Monica offices and will advise you on options to combine the two approaches into one seamless rhinoplasty surgery.  The combination of both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty will yield superior results.

Rhinoplasty surgery and nose surgery consultations may take up to one hour and require a full examination of the nose and airway, as well as discussion about your cosmetic concerns regarding your nose.   Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian will discuss your options for rhinoplasty, septoplasty, and septorhinoplasty during your consultation.  In addition, you will be able to view before and after photos of rhinoplasty results. To schedule a consultation in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, or Santa Monica, please call our offices at (310) 998-5533.

What should I expect after my rhinoplasty surgery with Dr. Karamanoukian? This website will provide you with detailed information about rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty procedures, whether you will be doing the procedure for the first time or as a revision rhinoplasty.  The purpose of rhinoplasty surgery is to reshape the nose and achieve a more balanced nasal profile that looks natural and fits your face.  Dr. Karamanoukian will advise you on options that will not necessarily change your nose or face, but make them harmoniously seam together.  After your surgery, you will be discharged to home and you will most likely be wearing a small rhinoplasty splint for at least 3 to 5 days.  This rhinoplasty splint will diminish the degree of swelling and will also minimize trauma to the nasal bones.  Within a few days, you will return to the office and Dr. Karamanoukian will remove the splint and replace all dressings.  During that office visit, you will be able to see the results of your rhinoplasty and your new nose.

What is a revision rhinoplasty? When plastic surgeons talk about surgery, they use terms to describe whether the surgery is a 'first-time' operation or whether the surgery is 'corrective or revisional' in which a procedure has been done before and requires correction. A revision rhinoplasty is performed on a person who has had rhinoplasty or nasal surgery before and is unhappy with the results.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian performs revision rhinoplasty surgery and has the primary goal of improving breathing and naturalizing the shape and contour of the nose.  Unlike primary rhinoplasties, revisional surgery will take more time and usually is more meticulous and detail oriented.  In addition, there is often less bruising when compared to the original surgery if the bone does not have to be rebroken (osteotomy). Revision Rhinoplasty Beverly Hills.

How do I know its time for a revision rhinoplasty? That is the million-dollar question.  Revision rhinoplasty should typically not be performed for at least one year after your original surgery, partly because the tissue is not yet healed and there is residual swelling and forming left to be completed.  Dr. Karamanoukian will be able to examine your nose during this period and determine whether you will likely need revision rhinoplasty. At that point, conservative management should proceed for a period of one year after your initial surgery.  For those of you who have had rhinoplasty years ago and do not like the appearance of your nose, a consultation will help allow you and Dr. Karamanoukian to time your revision rhinoplasty accordingly.

Can I combine rhinoplasty surgery with fat augmentation?  Rhinoplasty can be combined with other ancillary procedures on the face, particularly those that enhance the volume profile of the face, including facial fillers Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, and Fat Grafting.  Fat augmentation, fat grafting, and fat transplantation can add volume to the face and restore a more pleasant contour to the entire face.  In addition, chin implants are a common procedure to perform with rhinoplasty in order to balance the chin to nose proportion.  Dr. Karamanoukian will recommend the timing of these procedures based on your individual characteristics and the degree of complexity of your nose surgery.

Rhinoplasty surgery has many variations and can be used to improve the cosmetic appearance of the nose as well as the functional breathing capacity of the nose.  Rhinoplasty with Dr. Karamanoukian in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica can be performed as an outpatient procedure with minimal downtime and a natural looking result for the nose. The goal of surgery is to balance the nose in proportion to the rest of the face.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian possesses all of the credentials to successfully transform your nose into a natural looking nasal profile through nose reshaping surgery known as a rhinoplasty. The surgery is performed using general anesthesia and Dr. Karamanoukian will balance the benefits of cosmetics with breathing improvement.
